How did the tech world welcomes Nokia Lumia 1020 - the only smartphone with a 41MP camera


Nokia PureView technology, high resolution f/2.2 all-aspherical 1-group Carl Zeiss lens, 41-megapixel 2/3-inch BSI sensor with Optical Image Stabilization (OIS): this is what the Nokia Lumia 1020 is made of. Dubbed as the only smartphone with a 41MP camera sensor, full HD video and Nokia Rich Recording, Nokia Lumia 1020 was not only Nokia’s pride, it was also the most reviewed and talked about gadget in the tech world.

> High demand

Immediately after its release on July 26, 2013, the brilliant smartphone became readily available from the popular ecommerce stores Amazon.com and BestBuy. It was also offered by T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon Wireless carriers under contract terms. At this time of writing, the units are almost sold out on the two ecommerce sites and no longer offered by the national carriers.

> Convincing specs and apps

Nokia Lumia 1020 is embedded with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 dual-core 1.5Ghz CPU. Its operating system is the Windows 8.1. It has 32GB built-in memory, 2GB of RAM, and is compatible with 4G LTE network. Its maximum standby time is 16 days while the maximum talk time when used on 3G network is 12.5 hours. The camera comes equipped with imaging apps including Creative Studio, Lumia Camera, Lumia Cinemagraph, Lumia Panorama and Lumia Selfie. It also has built-in navigations apps namely HERE Drive+, HERE Maps, HERE City Lens, and HERE Transit. The smartphone has Cortana with it, a virtual assistant app powered by Bing SmartSearch and Notebook for information storage.

> Backed by world-class photographers

Nokia Lumia 1020 was promoted globally through a partnership program between Nokia and Red Bull Photography team. Awe-inspiring shots were bannered in the product’s official page in the now Microsoft Devices website. Among of the world-class photographers whom shared their amazing photos using the Nokia Lumia 1020 were Predrag Vuckovic, Craig Kolesky, Ray Demski, and Samo Vidic. A whitepaper entitled “Pushing the Boundaries of Digital Imaging” was also published in the site. The 23-pages whitepaper discusses the PureView Technology, the Nokia Pro Camera UI, and the key technologies and specifications of the device. A free app called Vyclone which synchs, edits and mixes video uploads from multiple shooters was also made available in the site to gain more attraction from photographers and video-making enthusiasts.

> High review ratings

The popular gadget and tech reviews and guides company Engadget published an interesting review statistics for Nokia Lumia 1020. It got an average critics’ review rating of 8.2/10 and average users’ review rating of 9.4/10. The rating was based on several key performance features and device functionality such as reception and call quality, battery life, ease of use, media support, and durability. Engadget’s global score was 86 indicating that the gadget is among of the top products in its category and a solid choice for most people. According to Engadget’s review panel, “the Lumia 1020 is the best Windows Phone we've used so far and offers the best camera in the industry…”

Another well-known tech and gadget review company CNET gave Nokia Lumia 1020 an overall editors’ rating of 8.2/10 based on design, features and performance. The smartphone received a customers review rating of 4/5 at Amazon while 4.6/5 at BestBuy. An independent photography review blog site, Photography Blog, gave the smartphone an overall rating of 4/5 with a breakdown of 4.5 on design, 4 on features, 3.5 on ease of use, 4.5 on image quality, and 3.5 on value for money.

> Increased the Lumia phone shipment

Microsoft reported 9.3 million shipments of Windows Phone-based Lumia in Q1 2015. This was 3.5 million higher compared to the previous quarter, Q4 2014, with a reported shipment of 5.8 million. At present, only a few more units are being sold in the online marketplace.
