SDN Fx Architecture – the Latest on Avaya’s Networking Products‎

Internet connectivity has truly gone beyond the boundaries of traditional LAN ecosystems. With increasing demands on fast internet speed and strong transmission signal from the global enterprise community, more and more networking products – such as PoE, UC and QoS software - are being introduced in the market year after year. And with robust and highly scalable enterprise management systems like ERP, CRM and BI – on-premise and cloud-based solutions with proven benefits to businesses of all sizes – most industries today not only requires real-time data transmission but also advanced data and client information security measures.

In the early days, management of these complex corporate assets is only entrusted to professionals with profound technical expertise – the network engineers, software architects and IT managers. But today, management of virtual machines, network switches and server infrastructures can already be entrusted to the hands of IT professionals with mid-level experience. Thanks to the easy-to-use network management software, optimal Quality of Service (QoS) can now be ensured even by IT technicians.

SDN Fx Architecture – Avaya’s latest

With its goal to simplify management of complex network systems, Avaya introduced SDN Fx Architecture on February 2014. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is a networking approach that leverages software applications to control, monitor and simplify the overall network operation. SDN Fx is a networking architecture built for the Avaya Fabric Connect, a network platform the supports network virtualization, cloud computing, mobility programs, Internet of Things (IoT) and video transmission protocols. Such product helps organization in reducing operating expenses, improving time-to-service, and supporting application and mobile devices management.

Importance of SDN

According to a 2013-2014 survey published by Information Technology Intelligence Consulting (ITIC), network downtimes can cost a business with over 1000 employees of over $100,000 in just one hour. What’s more surprising is that this amount is even higher in other industries where network availability is crucial to its 24/7 operation. Surveys and studies conducted by IT industry analysts firms revealed that brokerage service looses around $6.48 million, telecom with $2 million and retail with $1.1 million for every hour of network downtime. Aside from revenue losses, downtimes can also result to productivity losses, penalties and loss of discounts, loosing of employee confidence to IT, and worst of all, damage to reputation and good will.

Another interesting survey conducted by Dynamic Markets reveals the importance of SDN. According to the survey, the average cost for every network outages incident is equivalent to $137,000 in total lost productivity. The alarming truth is that about 80% of the companies globally are loosing this amount of money. On a benchmark survey conducted by Avaya to its Fabric Connect customers, they found out that when companies implement their SDN system, failover time improves from 13.6 minutes down to 320 milliseconds on selected cases. Significantly, Avaya also found out that about 88% of company CIOs and VPs have plans to implement SDN in the near future.

Avaya is rising to the challenges of modern networking by elevating the quality, accuracy and security of its products and services. With over 14 networking products coupled with Identity Management software that support BYOD programs, Configuration and Orchestration Manager for configuring network devices, and this newly launched SDN Fx Architecture that automates network management processes, Avaya is truly a leader in networking.
